We’ve been told many times about how great Malta’s economy and economic growth is. Yet, news just came out that the finance minister has ordered a spending freeze to all government agencies until at least the end of the year, according to The Shift News.

According to The Shift’s sources, the move also included an instruction to agencies to surrender money not already committed to projects.

Considering this move, alongside reports that the finance minister has recently warned fellow ministers that there was little room for further spending, and last week’s warnings from the Malta Chamber president on the government’s private warnings on public finances to stakeholders vs the picture it paints to the general public, one must ask: Are public finances actually strong, as we’ve often been told?

Is the public getting the full picture?

Additionally, it’s worth noting that according to The Shift, most of the government’s funds were spent during the run-up to last May’s elections. Was all the spending actually necessary in the interest of the nation? Are the giveaways promised by the PL during the electoral campaign going to be honoured in light of this situation?

The public must know the truth, and be given a true picture of the state of public finances.
